magritte (surrealism at it's best)

Ife royal head

I got a chance to see this one today on a trip to the museum, they are marvelous and intricate and beautiful in person. Ife was an ancient Nigerian city, and artists (many oftentimes women) produced sculptures made like this depicting the ancient royals using pure copper or terracotta. I especially loved this piece because of the serenity, and the beautiful face. This made my day today.

MIA - born free

exotic, crazy, controversial, slightly out of it, bold, sexy, rebel. i love you.

phenomenal woman: amel larrieux

i love this woman for a variety of reasons. first, she's absolutely talented, her voice is like an angel's, her songwriting abilities are unmatched, and the overall quality and originality of her music is boundless. second, her sense of style is absolutely incredible, she's the bohemian big sister i wish i could share closets with. sigh. AND she's stunnigly beautiful, with that hair, and those eyes, and that smile. sigh (again). however, what i love most about amel would definitely have to be the music, hands down.

i was introduced to her through groove theory the group she was in before going solo, but nothing can match her individual work. her writing style is lush, poetic, honest, raw, and completely evocative. there aren't enough musicians out there that are quite as talented as her to say the least, i wish she got more recognition than she does. she's absolutely phenonmemanal. i will love this woman until the end of time, and you should too.

kill the radio

blitz the ambassador is a hip-hop/visual artist hailing from ghana that is making moves in brooklyn and he is definitely amazing. i got to a chance to see him live this summer in brooklyn at the okay africa festival and he definitely killed along with his amazing band (trumpets, sax, strings, drums, everything). i love hip-hop, good hip-hop at least and i definitely enodrese this man, check him out.

here's his link (because myspace is still good for something) -->

mtviggy.com

ok so the internet is a scary place with way too much cool stuff to find out about, that takes up way too many hours of everyone's time but mtviggy.com is my favorite newest guilty pleasure (though i don't feel too guilty about). honestly, everyone should check it out.

global studies

as you will notice i'm a huge fan of anything ethnically inspired.(i'm not sure if that's politically correct or not, but i don't care much, well i do, but not really) anyways, i've always found global fashion/style beautiful especially more traditional items, kimonos, sarees, dashikis, and so much more. anything indigenous and beautiful i will fall in love with, immediately.

Lakme Fashion Week

if anyone know's anything about me i'm slightly obsessed with indian culture. maybe it's because of my mom's trindian/indian background but i think indian women are some of the most beautiful women in the world. i will be posting a lot of global fashion/art but they're will always probably be a tad bit more indian inspired stuff, i'm shamelessly biased. PS - somebody buy me a saree, now.

phenomenal woman: anna getaneh

model, designer, founder of african mosaique, ethiopian goddess, beautiful, amazing black woman.

frida, the genius

i can't really explain how much frida kahlo's work moves me, so i won't try. the art speaks for itself so i don't need to.

max ernst, my favorite surrealist

alexis phifer = bad (in my book anyway)

so, i'm slightly obsessed with rihanna's hair. i'm in the process of growing my hair out to get my own version of this amazing haircut. go riri!
